Start for freeThe Gospel of Mark chapter 13 contains Jesus' important teachings about the last days and His second coming. This chapter, along with Matthew 24 and Luke 21, provides key insights into end-time events and how believers should prepare.
Jesus begins by praising a poor widow's sacrificial giving of two small coins, contrasting her devotion with the showy donations of the wealthy. This sets the stage for His discourse on the end times, emphasizing the importance of wholehearted commitment to God.
The Temple's Destruction Foretold
As Jesus and His disciples leave the temple, they marvel at its magnificent stones and buildings. Jesus then makes a shocking prophecy:
"Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone shall be left upon another, that shall not be thrown down." (Mark 13:2)
This prediction was literally fulfilled in 70 AD when the Romans destroyed Jerusalem and the temple. But it also has a spiritual application - in the end times, believers will need to stand on their own faith, not depending on religious institutions or leaders.
Signs of the End Times
The disciples ask Jesus when these things will happen and what will be the signs. Jesus outlines several signs to watch for:
- False christs and false prophets will arise to deceive many
- Wars and rumors of wars
- Earthquakes, famines, and troubles
- Persecution of believers
- The gospel preached to all nations
Jesus warns His followers not to be alarmed by these things, as they are just "the beginning of sorrows" (Mark 13:8). He emphasizes the need for endurance and faithfulness in the face of coming trials.
The Abomination of Desolation
A key sign Jesus points to is "the abomination of desolation" spoken of by Daniel the prophet (Mark 13:14). This refers to the desecration of the temple that would precede its destruction.
Historically, this was fulfilled when the Roman armies surrounded Jerusalem in 70 AD and set up pagan standards on the temple mount. Jesus warned that when believers saw this, it would be time to flee the city.
This also has a future application, pointing to an end-time desecration of God's truth and people before Christ's return. Believers are urged to be watchful and discerning of the signs of the times.
The Great Tribulation
Jesus describes a time of unprecedented tribulation to come:
"For in those days there will be tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the creation which God created until this time, nor ever shall be." (Mark 13:19)
This refers both to the terrible suffering during Jerusalem's destruction and a future time of trouble for God's people before Christ's return. Jesus promises this time will be cut short for the sake of the elect.
Believers are warned that false christs and false prophets will arise, performing signs and wonders to deceive even the elect if possible. Discernment and faithfulness to God's Word will be crucial.
The Coming of the Son of Man
After the tribulation, cosmic signs will herald Christ's return:
"But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars of heaven will fall, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory." (Mark 13:24-26)
Jesus will return visibly and gloriously to gather His elect from all over the earth. This will be a loud, visible event that no one will miss.
Be Ready and Watchful
Jesus concludes with exhortations to be ready and watchful, as no one knows the day or hour of His return. He gives the parable of the fig tree, saying that when we see the signs He described, we can know His coming is near.
Believers are urged to be alert and faithful, living each day in anticipation of Christ's return. We are to continue carrying out our earthly responsibilities while keeping an eternal perspective.
