The Niche Centers in the Regions for R&D (NICER) program is a pivotal component of the Science for Change initiative. By granting universities the resources to become focal points for R&D, NICER is transforming local communities and industries. These centers are not only responding to immediate needs but are also paving the way for sustainable urbanization and regional growth across all 17 regions of the Philippines. The symposium "Revolution: A Symposium on Research Evolution towards a Society Centric R&D" highlighted several NICER projects making significant impacts:

• The Center for Astronomy R&D aims to advance the field of astronomy and space science, training over 500 young scientists and developing the PolLux device for monitoring light pollution.

• The Mountain Engineering R&D Center focuses on mitigating risks of landslides and extreme flooding in mountainous communities, potentially saving an estimated PHP 200 million per year in infrastructure damage.

• The Environmental Informatics R&D Center addresses issues like water scarcity, mango pests, and biodiversity threats through innovative technology and data analysis.

The Role of Collaboration and Community

By working closely with local government units, academic institutions, and industry partners, NICER centers are ensuring that R&D efforts are aligned with regional needs and priorities.
