In a significant development for the renewable energy sector, Epro Advanced Technology (EAT) has introduced a new material named SiPlus, which promises to revolutionize the way we generate and store hydrogen. During a recent press briefing led by CEO Albert Lao, it was revealed that SiPlus offers an innovative solution to the longstanding challenges associated with hydrogen energy.
What is SiPlus?
SiPlus is a porous silicon-based material capable of generating ultra-pure hydrogen on demand from water. This solid-state material is not only compact and robust but also facilitates easy transportation. Its introduction is poised to address critical issues like mass storage, safe handling, and efficient transportation of hydrogen—factors that have previously hindered the expansion of the hydrogen economy.
Potential Impact on Various Industries
The versatility of SiPlus extends across various applications. For instance, it can replace diesel in backup generator sets (gensets), which are known for high operational costs and significant carbon emissions. A typical 4 MVA genset consumes about 18,000 liters of diesel annually just for maintenance, emitting around 47 tons of CO2. SiPlus could eliminate these costs and environmental impacts entirely.
Moreover, with marine fuel oil being phased out soon due to environmental regulations, SiPlus stands out as an ideal alternative. It also provides a thermal energy storage solution through the exothermic heat released during its hydrogen generation process.
Enhancing Safety and Accessibility
One of the standout features of SiPlus is its safety profile. Unlike other solid-state hydrogen materials that store hydrogen directly, SiPlus generates hydrogen from water when needed. This on-demand generation significantly enhances safety by eliminating the risks associated with storing hydrogen onsite.
Additionally, traditional container logistics can be utilized to transport SiPlus efficiently using existing infrastructure. This method contrasts sharply with more expensive options like pressurized tube trailers used for transporting hydrogen.
Environmental Benefits and Zero Waste Process
SiPlus not only supports green initiatives by reducing carbon emissions but also contributes to environmental sustainability through its zero waste process. The benign silicates produced during hydrogen generation are utilized in manufacturing zeolites and green cements.
Global Partnerships and Future Plans
Recognizing the transformative potential of SiPlus, EAT has already established commercial and strategic partnerships across various continents including Australia, China, Europe, Hong Kong, and Japan. Plans are underway to introduce domestic gensets in Europe by 2023 and trial commercial gensets for construction in Hong Kong.
The Vision for a 'SiPlus Universe'
e CEO Albert Lao envisions creating what he calls the 'SiPlus Universe', an extensive collaboration across multiple sectors such as automotive, construction, logistics, oil & gas, renewable energy among others. This collaborative effort aims to fully leverage the potential of SiPlus in fostering a sustainable green transition globally.
e announcement marks not just a technological advancement but also a call to action for industries worldwide to join hands in realizing the vision of a sustainable future powered by green hydrogen.
