Start for freeThe rise of social media influencers has created new opportunities for self-proclaimed gurus to gain large followings and monetize their personal brands. But the story of Kat Torres shows how this can take a dark turn, as an aspiring model leveraged her Instagram fame into an alleged human trafficking operation targeting vulnerable young women.
Kat Torres grew up in poverty in northern Brazil before pursuing a modeling career as a teenager. She gained some success, appearing in magazines and at celebrity parties. But it was on Instagram where she truly found her audience, rebranding herself as a wellness and spirituality influencer.
With over a million followers, Kat offered advice on relationships, business success, and spirituality through her website, subscription service, and one-on-one video consultations. She positioned herself as someone who had overcome a difficult past to achieve success, inspiring others to follow her guidance.
"I felt deeply understood like never before. I found comfort in her words," said one former follower. "After I watched her videos, I could see improvements in the problems that I've been facing for years."
Kat drew inspiration from controversial spiritual leaders and self-help gurus, combining elements of their teachings into her own brand. She claimed to have a spiritual gift of making revelations and predictions, which she called "The Voice."
Many of her followers disclosed their deepest insecurities to Kat, believing her advice was working. But what they didn't know was that her wellness empire was built on half-truths, lies, and an obsession with money.
Former associates describe how Kat was actually being financially supported by wealthy men, including an alleged Russian oligarch. After undergoing breast surgery, Kat turned to psychedelic drugs like ayahuasca, which seemed to fuel increasingly erratic behavior.
As her following grew, Kat began isolating some of her most devoted followers. Ana, a student in Boston, says Kat convinced her to move to New York to be her live-in assistant. But the reality was very different from what was promised:
"My first impression of Kat was kind of confusing because I was used to seeing her in this perfect Instagram feed, always looking her best. And then when I got to her house, it was shocking because the house was really messy, really dirty, didn't smell good."
Ana says she was forced to work around the clock without pay, sleeping only when Kat was out with boyfriends. When confronted, Ana says Kat became aggressive.
"Now I see that she was using me as a slave. She wanted to see me doing everything that she wanted, not pay me, and I see that she had satisfaction in it," Ana recalled.
In 2022, Kat moved to Texas with her new 21-year-old husband Zach. She rented a five-bedroom mansion and began trying to recruit more followers to join her there. Several young women, including 21-year-old Leticia Maia and a woman called Sol, were convinced to move in.
Kat introduced what she called her "witch clan," setting up altars and performing rituals. But the women say they were quickly subjected to strict control, forbidden from communicating with each other or leaving their rooms without permission.
Sol says she was promised work with Kat's wellness business but was forced to do domestic work 24/7 instead. The money never materialized. Desirrê, another follower who moved in, describes how Kat began pressuring her to work at a strip club:
"Before I could even ask for an explanation, she said that I was wasting a $1 million opportunity. She talked about the money she had spent on me, including tickets, accommodation, food, furniture for my room and even the witchcraft she had done. She said if I decided to leave, all these expenses would be charged, and if I didn't pay, she would curse me."
Desirrê says she was forced to turn over all her earnings to Kat, who kept raising the daily targets. When Desirrê expressed wanting to stop, Kat allegedly threatened to report her to police for prostitution, which is illegal in Texas.
Eventually, Desirrê says Kat pressured her into full sex work, setting up profiles on escort websites. She describes being forced to meet dangerous clients and sleep on the streets when unable to meet Kat's $3000 daily quota.
Meanwhile, Kat's social media presence became increasingly disturbing. She posted rambling videos and made threats against those who spoke out against her. When the families of Desirrê and Leticia lost contact and began searching for them, Kat went on the offensive.
She forced the women to post videos claiming they were fine and didn't want to be contacted. But as the videos became more bizarre, families grew more concerned:
"I'm here to speak in the name of Kat Torres because the world is in danger. Kat Torres is in danger. Mark Zuckerberg, Vladimir Putin, they need to find Kat Torres. They need to save the world from war. If they don't see these messages, the messages posted on this Instagram account, the world will be destroyed."
As police closed in, Kat fled with the women to Maine. A law enforcement officer managed to speak with them on the phone, but Kat can be heard threatening the women beforehand:
"Guys, they are full of tricks. He's a detective, be very careful, for God's sake. I'll kick you out if you say anything, I'll scream."
Kat was eventually arrested and deported back to Brazil to face charges of human trafficking, slave labor, and medical fraud. Over 20 women have reported being scammed or exploited by her.
In a prison interview, Kat denied all wrongdoing, claiming the allegations were made up by jealous people seeking fame. She showed no remorse, stating: "I don't regret one single word I said."
Many of the women are still dealing with trauma from their experiences. Ana said: "Until recently, I still heard her in my head. I was thinking about giving up on life, about suicide, because I invested my whole life in her."
The case highlights the potential dangers of unqualified social media influencers gaining devoted followings. What started as inspirational wellness content allegedly devolved into exploitation and abuse.
As one investigator noted: "Human traffickers aren't always like in the movies where you have maybe a gang that kidnaps people. It's far more common that it's someone you trust. It's more like a relationship is built and trust is gained and it's grooming tactics like that."
While Kat Torres awaits trial, her former followers hope sharing their stories will prevent others from falling victim to similar schemes. The rise of social media has created new avenues for predators to groom and exploit vulnerable individuals seeking guidance and belonging.
This case serves as a stark warning about the dark side of Instagram wellness culture and the importance of critically evaluating the qualifications of self-proclaimed gurus. Behind the perfectly curated posts may lie manipulation, coercion and abuse.
